Here is something I have meant to post about for a while. It is a metaphor in the book 'Dangerous Undertaking' by James Harlow Brown. Shawn has previously blogged about the extensive use of metaphor in the book. The metaphor is in a story about a NASA engineer who discovered something that took him off his 'autopilot' and helped him realised the impact his behaviour and actions have. I have tried to paraphrase the story to capture its essence: The engineer was sitting by a pond, contemplating. He saw a frog jump into the pond and noticed how the ripples spread right across the pond. He watched intently and realised that there were many other sources of movement on the surface of the pond. Insects would occasionally touch the water causing tiny ripples. A swallow swooped down and...

age_jul05.JPGThe marketing department at The Age newspaper decided that promoting 65% off cover price home delivery offer is more important than a headline about Glenn McGrath and his biography about life with Jane. What other newspaper publisher trashes their masthead and editorial content in this way? ...

About a month ago I posted about the Indepedents' Day poll that AIR was running to find the best Australian independent albums of all time.Well, the list is finally out. The Triffid's Born Sandy Devotional topped the list followed by the Saints' classic single (I'm Stranded)/No Time, Hoodoo Gurus and with the Go-Betweens rounding out the top 5. The Avalanches placed pretty well, even beating AC/DC but then again it's probably due to the types of people who voted. It's also a bit strange that the Eddy Current Suppression Ring is in the list while there's no You Am I.Anyway, the final list is as follows:1. The Triffids - Born Sandy Devotional2. The Saints - (I'm) Stranded/No Time3. Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage Romeos4. The G...

on Ross Garnaut at July 4, 2008, 6:44 pm (cached at July 4, 2008, 7:15 pm)
There's a lot of talk about Ross Garnaut and his completely ridiculous suggestion that in order to preserve the present living conditions on the one planet we have and on which we (and even our precious economies) rely we probably will need to make some personal sacrifices. The patronising git even warns:"The most inappropriate response would be to delude ourselves, taking small actions that create an appearance of action, but which do not solve the problem."I think you'll find, Mr Smarty Pants, that we voters are ONLY comfortable with our politicians "taking small actions that create an appearance of action, but which do not solve the problem". That's our entire system of government, mate, and we'll thank you not to disparage it. IT PAYS YOUR SALARY. (Insert taxpaye...

receiptpxx.JPGSix months ago we dropped the price of the Epson TM-T88IV by 34% to $525 including GST and delivery. We ran the offer for a month, extended it and extended it again. Yesterday we made the new price permanent. We were able to do this thanks to customer and supplier support. While our core business is software, many of our small business retail customers like to have one technology supplier. Migrating to a thermal receipt printer is easier is they purchase from us as we can help with drivers appropriate to our software. Buying elsewhere leaves them on their own for installation, setup and other bumps they may encountr alon the way. Given the buying preference of many of our customers we offer hardware as...
